HOW DO WE SHARE CULTURE?

MARK JACOBSON

NAME THREE OF YOUR IMPORTANT GOALS FOR YOUR LIFE AND HOW Y
OU HOPE TO ATTAIN THEM:
Successfully graduate from college by remaining passionate about my education.

Obtain a technologically oriented career by spring boarding out at higher education.

Live and die happily by minimizing stress.

DO YOU FEEL CULTURALLY CONNECTED TO Y
OUR FAMILY’S ETHINC PAST? WHY OR WHY NOT?
I feel only partially connected to my family’s ethnic past. We are Americanized, and only small portions of my heritage appear, such as the random phrase or cuisine.

IS IT IMPORTANT FOR THE YOUTH GENERATION TO UNDERSTAND THEIR CULTURAL ROOTS OR SHOULD YOU ALWAYS BE LOOKING FORWARD, CREATING A NEW VERSION OF YOUR IDENTITY FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE?
I believe the youth should find an equilibrium between the two paths. Our cultural roots tie us together like an extended family, but they should not be too restricting as to influence conformism.

WHAT DO YOU THINK DEFINES YOUR IDENTITY – NATIONALITY, FAMILY, RELIGION, INDIVIDUALITY OR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRLEY? WHY?

I think nationality, family, religion and individuality all contribute to identity, but your personal traits truly make you who you are. Culture is a large presence, but personality overrules it in my opinion.

IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE POSITIVE THING ABOUT THE YOUTH CULTURE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT (YOUR SCHOOL, NEIGHBORHOOD OR CITY) WITH AN OUTSIDER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My school is a miniature version of Philadelphia as a whole. It is a cultural melting pot where people of various backgrounds bring their heritage to the table. You can visit our class and visit the world at the same time.

I believe that it’s very important to understand your cultural roots. It plays a big part in who your are. I don’t believe that creating a new version of your identity for the present and future is as important as learning about the o
riginal image of our heritage’s culture.

WHAT DO YOU THINK DEFINES YOUR IDENTITY – NATIONALITY, FAMILY, RELIGION, INDIVIDUALITY OR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRLEY? WHY?

IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE POSITIVE THING ABOUT THE YOUTH CULTURE IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT (YOUR SCHOOL, NEIGHBORHOOD OR CITY) WITH AN OUTSIDER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Three of my important goals are to be a good daughter/daughter-in-law, wife and mom. Family is very important to me and as a result of that, my world centers around my family’s goals for me. My goals are to make the people I care about happy. I don’t think I’m stifling myself as a result; this is the way I feel. I hope to attain my goals by obeying my family’s wishes.

I do feel culturally connected to my family’s ethnic past. My family and I live in the US but we still live in a very traditional way. Every aspect of my world is influenced and dominated by my ethniticity. Emotionally, I can say that I am culturally
connected to my ethnicity. I appreciate the beauty in my family’s ethnicity.

CULTURAL ROOTS OR SHOULD YOU ALWAYS BE LOOKING FORWARD, CREATING A NEW VERSION OF YOUR IDENTITY FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE?
It is important for the youth to understand their cultural roots. It is impossible to know who we are without knowing who we were. What our cultural past holds is a part of us because it has gotten us where we are. It is also necessary to decide where in life we wish to be. The youth should let both their wishes and their culture influence them.

DO YOU FEEL CULTURALLY CONNECTED TO YOUR FAMILY’S
ETHINC PAST? WHY OR WHY NOT?
I do feel I am culturally connected to my family. I have lived in America for the past eight years yet, I only speak Albanian – my native language – at home. I am very close to my family back home and I look forward to visiting them every summer. I enjoy being surrounded by my old environment.

IS IT IMPORTANT FOR THE YOUTH GENERATION TO UNDERSTAND THEIR CULTURAL ROOTS OR SHOULD YOU ALWAYS BE LOOKING FORWARD, CREATING A NEW VERSION OF YOUR IDENTITY FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE?
Although it is important to be open-minded to new things or peo
ple and places you didn’t know before, it is very important for the youth generation to understand their cultural roots. After all, you must know your past to understand who you are. This way, even though you may be on a search for something new or different, there may be something from your past that you cherish and want to hold on to. Knowing the past also keeps you from repeating mistakes.

WHAT DO YOU THINK DEFINES YOUR IDENTITY – NATIONALITY, FAMILY, RELIGION, INDIVIDUALITY OR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRLEY? WHY?

I think that all of my experiences, the people I have encountered, the values I have been taught, define my identity. It has deepened my mind to other people’s beliefs and values.

I think all of these identify my identity because all of these are what made me who I am today, therefore, it cannot be separate.

I don’t have three important goals in life. My only goal is to live life how I want it.

DO YOU FEEL CULTURALLY CONNECTED TO YOUR FAMILY’S ETHINC PAST? WHY OR WHY NOT?
No, because I’m too mixed to feel culturally connected to my family’s ethnic past; I’m Polish, Irish, Hispanic and Italian. I have no family traditions or anything that is part of my ethnic background.

I think that the youth generation should always look forward. Cultural roots do not define a person.

I think individuality defines my identity. I’m too mixed up for nationality to define my identity, nothing like my family, so I can’t be identified by them.
